Nathan Butler

APRN, PMHNP-BC

Dr. Nathan Butler is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over seven years of experience providing compassionate, evidence-based care across both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Utah Valley University and completed his Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Utah.

Dr. Butler has extensive experience treating individuals across the lifespan with a broad range of psychiatric conditions, including mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related disorders, ADHD, psychotic and psychosis-related disorders, personality disorders, treatment-resistant depression, and substance use disorders. He is skilled in managing complex psychiatric presentations and comorbid medical conditions, with experience spanning acute psychiatric care and longitudinal outpatient treatment.

My Approach

His clinical philosophy is holistic, collaborative, and patient-centered. Dr. Butler integrates current psychiatric research with thoughtful medication management while emphasizing non-pharmacological strategies such as lifestyle and sleep optimization, mindfulness practices, emotional regulation skills, and psychoeducation. He is intentional and conservative with prescribing—aiming to minimize unnecessary medications while maximizing long-term stability, insight, and quality of life.

Central to Dr. Butler’s work is the “fellow traveler” philosophy described by Dr. Irvin Yalom. Rather than positioning himself as an authority above the patient, he views the therapeutic relationship as a partnership grounded in mutual respect, curiosity, and shared humanity. He believes meaningful progress occurs when individuals feel understood, supported, and actively involved in their care.

Outside of his clinical work, Dr. Butler volunteers with local youth programs and enjoys spending time with his family, engaging in outdoor activities, and appreciating art and cinema.
